چکیده

INTRODUCTION The discrimination of visual scenes is a complex task that the human mind can achieve rapidly. Using biofeedback techniques we may be able to decode neural responses to visual scenes in a real-time manner. Multivariate pattern classification and prediction offers an alternative approach to standard univariate analysis techniques, and has recently been applied in MR imaging using support vector machines (SVM) [1], and to improve real-time imaging [2]. Previous work [3] has investigated scene identification using MVPA, but required large numbers of training examples. This study applied SVM techniques to predict the viewing of natural and urban scenes, and to calculate prediction accuracy based on the number of training examples as a first step towards real-time biofeedback.

Incidental visual memory for objects in scenes

Three experiments were conducted to investigate the existence of incidentally acquired, long-term, detailed visual memory for objects embedded in previously viewed scenes. Participants performed intentional memorization and incidental visual search learning tasks while viewing photographs of real-world scenes. A visual memory test for previously viewed objects from these scenes then followed. P...

Human discrimination of depth of field in stereoscopic and nonstereoscopic photographs.

Depth of field (DOF) is defined as the distance range within which objects are perceived as sharp. Previous research has focused on blur discrimination in artificial stimuli and natural photographs. The discrimination of DOF, however, has received less attention. Since DOF introduces blur which is related to distance in depth, many levels of blur are simultaneously present. As a consequence, it...

Influence of local scene color on fixation position in visual search.

Where observers concentrate their gaze during visual search depends on several factors. The aim here was to determine how much of the variance in observers' fixations in natural scenes can be explained by local scene color and how that variance is related to viewing bias. Fixation data were taken from an experiment in which observers searched images of 20 natural rural and urban scenes for a sm...

Luminance cues constrain chromatic blur discrimination in natural scene stimuli.

Introducing blur into the color components of a natural scene has very little effect on its percept, whereas blur introduced into the luminance component is very noticeable. Here we quantify the dominance of luminance information in blur detection and examine a number of potential causes. We show that the interaction between chromatic and luminance information is not explained by reduced acuity...

The dynamics of visual pattern masking in natural scene processing: a magnetoencephalography study.

We investigated the dynamics of natural scene processing and mechanisms of pattern masking in a scene-recognition task. Psychophysical recognition performance and the magnetoencephalogram (MEG) were recorded simultaneously. Photographs of natural scenes were briefly displayed and in the masked condition immediately followed by a pattern mask. Viewing the scenes without masking elicited a transi...
